There is a wise saying: “A friend in need is a friend indeed” and it is always true. A friend is a person who you can trust. I think that everyone needs good friends, otherwise life becomes boring. We all need people to laugh and to cry with, to go out and to have fun with, to play active and board games with and finally to share darkest secrets with, etc. These people are called friends. In the process of time there are fewer friends, but those who stay become as close to you as relatives.

Time shows who is reliable, trustworthy, who shares the same interests with you, who accepts you as you are. These people are real friends and we should treasure them. Recent research has shown that having friends increases lifespan. These people inspire us, tell us to eat healthy, encourage us to keep a diet if necessary. On the other hand, friends can reinforce the bad habits you developed. Thus, they need to be chosen wisely. Life is depressing without friends. After family members these people are those who care for you. Best friends don’t necessarily please you all the time telling nice things. They can sometimes tell you the bitter truth. It doesn’t mean they want to hurt you. They simply want to help you to sort out things.

It’s always good to have fair and trustworthy friends, because we needs people who feel happy with our success and sad with our failure. They are always there for you and never ask anything in return except love and friendship.

My name is Olena. I am thirteen years old. My parents and I often move from town to town. Both my parents are geologists; they research the types of mineral deposits. I have lived in seven towns of Russia and I want to live only in one town very much. I lived in Gelendzhik a few years ago and I realized that I want to live by the Black Sea. The sea charmed me. I dream of having a double-storey house with a swimming pool behind it. I wish I had my own room and we could see the sea out of the living room window. If we had such house I’d be the happiest person. I like reading and drawing very much that’s why I want to have a library and in the evenings I would draw beautiful views surrounding our house. I wish there were a big kitchen in our house where my whole family could have dinner. I would also like to have a big TV set and a huge fireplace in our living room. I hope my dream will come true soon.

Many of us have some wishes for the countries we live in that we desire to fulfill to bring some positive changes about. Of course, we have limited powers as humble citizens, but we still have certain rights. If I were a president of the country I would pay attention to three main problems. First of all, I would strengthen and improve the educational system.

Education level has notable dropped since last decades. It seems that there is much more pressure on students but lesser outcome. Secondly, I would work to create the egalitarian society, where people of all races, religious beliefs, nations, occupations, interests have the same rights. Thirdly, I would supply everyone with decent jobs, although for this accomplishment many new factories and plants should be built, or new companies established. These three issues are the first on the list of changes. Other than that, there are many things that I would try to improve in the country if I were a president. For example, I would lower the taxes for those who live in poor conditions. I would develop the area of space exploration as it is important to know more about our galaxy. And, I would certainly oppose the wars and terrorism.

I’m against any type of violence in the world. Thus, I would try to make my country a more peaceful place to live. I’m also concerned about children, who live in orphanages. If it was up to me, I would supply them with all the necessary things: clothing, toys, books, good food and attention. I’m sure that these changes are not easy to bring around and it needs time and patience, but I would work hard to make these things done.

My name is Anton and I’m 14 years old. I study at the seventh form of the secondary school. My class teacher’s name is Maria Andreevna, while our principal’s name is Vladimir Sergeevich. He is a kind and understanding man. He organizes lots of interesting events for us. At the same time whenever there is a problem he is there to solve it. Looking at him, I wish to become a school principal in the future. If I achieved such heights in educational field, I would make some changes in the system.

For example, I’d create several associations at school depending on pupils’ interests. It wouldn’t matter how old is the child. The only thing that matters is the talent or hobby. There would be one literary association, Maths circle, group of scouts, designers’ group, music band, etc. In my opinion, it’s important to spend some time after the actual classes with people who share the same interests. Personally I would join the literary club as I like reading novels and poetry. As a school principal I would make all the stationery free for teachers and pupils. I would also change the time of studying. At the moment our school functions from early morning till evening as there are two shifts.

I would prefer all students to attend classes only in the morning, e.g. from 8 am till 12 pm. Morning is the most productive time of the day. The rest of the school day pupils would spend attending the clubs or associations they cho

My name is Phillip and I’m 14 years old. Zoo is one of my favourite places to visit since childhood. There is a wonderful and huge zoo in the city where I live. When I was younger my parents used to take me there every once in a while, to be precise twice a year. Each time I was as happy as during the first visit, mainly because the administration took good care of the establishment. My father knows well the director of the zoo, so each time we went there we met him and talked for a bit. Mr. Markov seems to be a nice and well-informed man. He says that each season they put lots of effort to keep everything at the zoo in good shape and to save rare animals from extinction. I believe it’s absolutely true. If I were a zoo director I would do the same. However, some things would be changed or added.

For example, I’d like to launch the project for the visitors where they can learn many new things about the history of world zoos and some information about certain species. Speaking about our zoo, there are already the wooden plates with interesting information, but my project would involve the real guides who could interact with people. In my opinion, live communication is much better than listening to audio-guides or reviewing the booklets. There is also a child’s corner in our zoo where I’d change some rules. Many domestic animals are kept there.

They are not in cages. Instead they freely roam around and eat the surrounding vegetation. It’s forbidden to feed or pet them, which I don’t like. I’m sure there would be no harm if kids could pet some friendly sheep, piglets or goats.

More than a century ago people couldn’t even imagine that they would fly from one place to another by airplanes. Travelling by air was only a dream. It could be seen in fairy-tales, for example, in stories about the flying carpet. Today people fly here and there as a part of their usual routine. As for my family, we fly once or twice a year, but I know there are people who use airplanes as transportation several times a day. It is especially true about people who are very busy and often have business trips.

If I could fly that frequently I would dedicate my life to travels. I wish I had a job which involved flying from one country to another for informative reasons. For example, I would like to write a book about the traditions in different countries. I understand that I would have to spend at least some time in each visited country to learn about their customs and folklore, but that’s even better. Apart from that, if I could fly I would explore all the African countries. I’m very fond of savannahs and wild animals. That’s one of my dreams to visit African national parks and to watch the lions, elephants, giraffes and antelopes in their natural habitat.

I know that there are helicopter or mini-airplane tours which allow enjoying the beauty of dangerous savannahs from the air. At the same time there is a chance to watch them close-up taking jeep tours.

If I were a magician I would change many unjust things in the world. One of the first things that I would want to see changed is the disappearance of zoos. I want animals to live only in their natural habitats, but not in confined cages. I know that real magicians exist. Some of them work at the circus, where they present lots of tricks for children amusing and entertaining them. My parents used to take me there when I was younger and I truly enjoyed the magicians’ show. However, in global means I wish magicians changed lots of things in the world, for example, war situation.

I know that in many developing countries people live in war conditions. As for me, I think that any wars involving guns and people’s deaths should be strictly banned. Another major thing I would like to see changed is the possibility of education in poorer countries. For example, in many African countries people live in bad and unsanitary environment. There is also a lack of medicine in such countries, so people can’t get decent treatment. In case education was free of charge and easy to get people would have more doctors, lawyers, teachers and other noble professions in the country. To make these things happen one shouldn’t be a magician at all. Everything depends on the level of greed which is present in more developed countries.

People who buy posh cars, mansions, possessions, could have been more understanding to those who have nothing to eat at all. If rich people donated more often and cut their expenses that would save lots of starving people on our planet.

I consider that man’s health depends on his mode of life. To prevent the diseases it’s necessary to keep some simple regulations: to go in for sports, to eat carefully, to take a rest and to walk frequently in the open air. I’m fifteen years old and the last three years I do my morning exercises. It inspirits and gives strength to me for a whole day. I add dousing with cold water in winter.

I think that conditioning to the cold is the main method for preserving my health. My favourite winter sports are cross-country skiing and skating. I prefer to run in the park and play tennis in summer. I go to the swimming pool twice a week the whole year round. Swimming increases the respiratory system. I also try to observe a day regimen. Every day I go to bed and get up at approximately the same time. I give special attention to meals. I don’t eat fatty and high-calorie foods and I don’t drink heavily gas-cut beverages.

At my time of life some peers smoke and drink alcohol but I think that it’s dangerous for a human organism and sooner or later it will be injurious to our health. I think that everybody must begin to take care of his health in his youth because it’s easier to take care of our health than to recover it.

My name is Ekaterina. I’m thirteen years old. I’ve been studying English since I was eight. Nobody made me, it was my decision. Now I know English pretty well. I have a lot of friends from different countries and I began to learn English to talk to them easily. I like to read very much and I would like to read some classical works of English authors in the original. It is interesting and absorbing reading.

Reading English books I improve my memory and my pronunciation of English words becomes better. Pupils who speak English well have more opportunities to enter prestigious university. I want to achieve much in my life and that’s why English is necessary for me. I like travelling and when I grow up I want to visit many countries. English is considered one of the international languages.

Animals are very important in our life. Some of them can become good friends for us. It is especially true about domestic animals. On days when I had no friends to play with in my childhood, I played with my dog. I had both dogs and cats. Apart from these pets, once we bought a talking parrot and a hamster. I should say, parrots can be aggressive sometimes, although they are rather funny. Hamsters need lots of attention and care. Their cage often gets dirty and they need similar rodents to play with. The best choice is to keep a cat or a dog as a pet.

Cats are very sweet animals. I had several cats during my childhood. Some of them were grey, some black and white. As for dogs, I had only two dogs of various breeds. I can say that looking after animals and taking care of them is one of my favourite pastimes. Out of all family members I was the one who went for a walk with our dogs. I fed them, played with them, trained and treated whenever they got ill. For example, my German shepherd has once broken its leg. I took gentle care of it until the leg was fine again. Speaking of other animals, I like almost all species that exist in the world, except insects. I’m not very fond of different insects. Moreover, I’m afraid of spiders and cockroaches.

When I want to learn something new about wild animals, I watch Animal Planet. It’s a very cognitive program that tells about a wide range of species. That’s how I learned that not all reptiles are dangerous and not all mammals are safe.

Family is an essential part of the society and it plays the most important role in everybody’s life. It means that the most important people in our lives are our family members. Family is represented by a close unit of parents and children living together. I believe that everyone wants to have a happy family and good relations with all its members. In my opinion, a happy family should have mutual interests, hopes and dreams to share. Other important issues are love, trust and respect. No family can exist without love. Happiness is also impossible without love. When people love each other, they can overcome all the obstacles. Unfortunately, modern couples often build their relations on some other values, such as money, social position, etc. They think that happiness will come itself and nobody has to make an effort. They are mistaken, as good family relations are impossible without mutual understanding and love. Children in the family also play an important role. To keep up ideal relations with parents they should be kind to them, trusting and understanding. They should share everyday joys and sorrows with their parents. Whenever, there is a difficult situation, parents are the first people to help them and find the way out. My family is not big. I live with my parents and my little sister. I think that we have ideal relations, as we never quarrel with each other. Instead, we always treat each other with respect and love. If there is a problem, we talk about it and try to find the best possible solution.

I enjoy eating out. We often go to a restaurant with my parents. It usually happens at weekend or Friday evenings, when everybody is free from work and studies. My mum likes Italian food: pasta with different sauces, pizza, lasagne and other national dishes. My father prefers eastern cuisine. His favourite dish is grilled meat with vegetables. As for me, I’m a fan of sushi and fast food. As you see our tastes differ. That’s why we choose to go to various restaurants. For example, last week, we went to the nearest sushi-bar. We had a great time there. First of all, the atmosphere in the restaurant was nice. There were black square tables and lots of Japanese national ornaments. We chose the table next to the window.

The waiters were also very kind and welcoming. My parents don’t like Japanese food much, so they ordered simply some salads and fried chicken wings. Luckily, they don’t serve only national food in this restaurant. I ordered a portion of traditional rolls and a cup green tea. Everything was rather delicious. My parents tried a small piece of my rolls and said they weren’t bad. We asked the waiter to bring us the bill and left after paying. It was an excellent evening. Sometimes I eat out with my friends. We usually go to a fast food place. There is a large shopping center not far from my house and we often go there.

When we get hungry, we go to the ground floor where many fast food restaurants are situated. There we usually have a sandwich or a portion of pancakes with a glass of juice.

I'm fond of reading. My favourite writer is William SomersetMaugham and i would like to tell about his biography.
William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and spent his childhoodin Paris in the family of a British diplomat. Having lost hisparents at an early age, he went to live in England with hisuncle, who was a clergyman. He was educated at King's school inCanterbury studied painting in Paris, went to Heidelbury Universityin Germany and spent six years at St.Thomas Hospital in Englandstudying to be a doctor. He was an unsatisfactory medical studentfor his heart wasn't in medicin. He wanted, he had always wantedto be a writer and in the evening after his tea, he wrote and read.
In 1897 he wrote a novel called "Liza of Lambeth", sent itto a publisher and it was accepted. It was something of asuccess. So William Somerset Maugham decided to abandon hismedical profession and he did it with relif. The next ten yearswere very hard on him. He learned the terrible difficulties ofmaking a living by writing. But he survived. He became a famouswriter. He never regretted the five years he had spent at thehospital. They taught him pretty well all he knew about humannature.
The novel "The moon and sixpence" (1919) is based on thelife of the artist Paul Gauguin was an immediate success. Maughamwent to Tahiti and lived in Gauguin's hut while writing the book. His fame as a short story writer began with "The Trembling of aleaf". Since then he wrote many collections of books, essays andcriticism. Many of his books and stories came out of hisextensive travels in the East. His autobiographical books "Thesumming up" and "A writer's Notebook" are remarkable for bothstyle and sincerity. His books have been reprinted many times.
In 1927 William Somerset Maugham settled in the South ofFrance and lived there until his death in 1965.

My favourite singer is Michael Jackson. I like his songs very much because they are full of energy and very melodic. I also like the way he dances.
There were nine children in Michael's family. They lived in a small fourroom house. Later he lived in a house which has seventeen rooms downstairs and sixteen rooms upstaires. It stands in 2,700 acres of ground. Besides the house there are guest houses, a golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts, stables, gardens, lakes, forests and a zoo.
A lot of strange stories are told about Jackson. It's difficult to decide whether they are true or not. Michael never gave interviews and was rarely seen in public, except on stage. Certainly his behaviour may seem eccentric. In public he often wore a face mask to protect himself from germs, he slept inside an oxygen capsule, which he believed would help him to live longer. But his manager says that Jackson wasn't eccentric. He was just shy. Michael sang in public for the first time when he was five. Since that time he had always been in the public eye. And since that time he had been working like a grown-up.
There were times when he came home from school and he only had time to put his books and get ready for the studio. He often sang until late at night, even if it was past his bedtime. There was a park across the street from the studio, and Michael looked at the kids playing games. And he just stared at them in wonder — he couldn't imagine such freedom, such a carefree life.
He said about himself that in the crowd he was afraid, on stage he was safe. Off stage he felt happiest with animals and children. He was well-known for his childish tastes. It's not a secret that his favourite hero was Peter Pan.
Michael has been called "the child who never grew up", but I think he was a grown-up who was never allowed to be a child.
Whether he was crazy, childish, eccentric or just shy, he was no fool. He created a brilliantly successful image, he made a lot of money and spent it on the things he wanted. Who wouldn't like to do the same?

Dear Charles,
Many thanks for your letter and the formal invitation you enclose. It is very nice of you to offer to meet our expenses while we are in Britain. I gratefully accept it on the assumption that we shall have the pleasure of receiving you here as the return part of the exchange visit.
We can discuss all the points with you personally or by letter should you wish to come over before we go. I suppose this would be a very good idea as the dates of our visits are still vague. Anyhow, I want you to understand that we shall be delighted to have you here with us any time you choose to come.
Once again many thanks and best wishes from my wife and myself.
Yours sincerely,
Nikolay

As you know, our group has two English lessons a week: on Tuesday and Friday. When the teacher comes and opens the door, we come in and sit down. Then we open our bags and take our exercise-books and Bonk's text-books.
And soon the lesson begins... We usually start it by pronouncing different words and sounds. Then we are usually invited to the blackboard by the teacher and Oksana Victorovna asks us the words we were to teach by heart. After that we usually do some exercises from the text-book. These exercises teach us to ask questions, or how to make negative sentences and so on. Then, using tests in our exercise-books, we usually write spelling, two tests and a quiz. During the lesson we speak mostly English, but sometimes, when the students don't understand the teacher or the task in the text-book, we start speaking Russian.
What I like best of all in our English lessons is the merry, friendly atmosphere in the class. The funny joke are always greeted.
To the end of the lesson the teacher always gives us a huge homework. It usually consists of learning new words or a text by heart and making several exercises in a writing form. Then we all say good-bye to our teacher and begin preparing to the new lesson.
Here I want to end my small composition about the English lessons in the university, where I study. And I want to say you that all English lessons are among the most interesting and the most exciting lessons; that's why I like them very much.

The charms and pleasures of domestic life are known to everyone. Just go out to another town to see your relative, and there you will be secretly pining for your home, sweet home. You will remember the delightful evenings you passed around the fireside. It will be delightful to recall the scene of your father returning home after his day's work, the children climbing on his knee; the mother preparing the evening meal and your sisters, talking of sweet innocent things; The kindly neighbors drop in helping to pass the evening hours merrily with their pleasant and cheerful conversation.
These homely joys may at first sight seem to be somewhat commonplace. But as we grow older we find that they are the true sources of happiness. The joys given by wealth, rank, position and fortune, are short lived; they soon pass away. But the joys of domestic life are of a permanent nature. They always remain with us. A kind father, an affectionate mother, a sympathetic brother, a loving wife, a dutiful son, a devoted, obedient daughter fill our life with cheerfulness. Rank; wealth and fame are not within the reach of all, thy come only to those who are fortunate. But these domestic joys can be enjoyed even by the poorest laborer. While the pleasures given by wealth, position and fame are of an exciting nature and make our soul weary of the world, the serene joys of domestic happiness soothe our very soul and bring us peace, contentment, and cheer fullness.
But it is not for these joys alone that our home is to be valued. A home is often-the best school for acquiring the noble virtues of honesty, truthfulness, faithfulness, sincerity, obedience, sympathy, self-sacrifice, and self-denial. We imitate the actions of our parents and relatives. From them we learn to be sympathetic, obedient and true to others. The unselfish devotion with which the mother serves her husband and children and the wonderful self-denial which the father displays in daily life are noble examples of the highest virtues. Self-control, the noblest of all virtues, is largely a result of home influences.
Most of our pleasant associations are often connected with our homes. For it was there that most of us spent the happy days of our childhood and youth. Imagination clothes these scenes with loveliness and throws a charm of romance over them. So it is that, wherever we may roam, there is no place like home.

Every young man wants to live independently. And I'm not an exception. Of course, the time will come, when I will alone in my flat. I wait for this moment and imagine, that my new flat will be at least three roomed. There will be a study, a bed-room, a dinning-room. Of course, there also will be a kitchen and a bathroom. The dinning- room will be a big comfortable room with a big table in the center. There also will be several armchairs, and a big TV set in it. In this room I shall receive guests. I also shall put a piano in one of the corners of the room and shall start taking piano lessons because I like this musical instrument very much.
The bed-room will become my favorite one because it is a room of rest where everybody can spend several hours without noise and fuss. There I shall put my PC that helps me very much.
Another room – study will be the place where I shall do all my work. There will be a large table full of papers and several shelves. I am going to gather a big collection of books, so they won't stay empty.
That's how I imagine my future flat. I hope that these dreams will become true.

Hobby is what a person likes to do in his spare time. Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting. The most popular hobby is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities from gardening to traveling, from chess to volleyball. Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This hobby is becoming more and more popular. Making things include drawing, painting, handicrafts. Many people collect something - coins, stamps, compact discs, toys, books. Some collections are pretty valuable. Rich people often collect paintings, rare things and other art objects. Often such private collections are gifted to museums, libraries.
As for me, I like to listen to music. 3 months ago my parents bought me a compact disc player and I decided to collect compact discs. I like different music, it only must be good. I collect discs of my favourite groups and singers. I carefully study the information printed on disc booklets. I try to find out everything about my favourite singers. Also I like to watch music programmes on TV. I want to keep up with the news in the world of music.Of course, I like to spend my spare time with my friends. We talk about all sorts of things ( politics, teachers, girls). We discuss films, books, TV programmes. In fine weather we like to be in the open air. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest. We make a fire, bake potatoes and have a lot of fun. When the weather is bad, my friends come to my place. We have a good time together.

The beach is a traditional summer destination thousands of people. Everyone wants to go to the beach! Sun, surf, and sand are a magnetic lure for millions of visitors. The wealth of things to do includes sunbathing, jogging, boating, fishing and surfing. Ever presented breezes keep the temperature comfortable and the water warn. Beach cities are the centres for easygoing life styles. The newest trends in youth culture often originate there. For example, the roller-skating craze started on the Venice boardwalk.
Though sea, sun and sand are the same, people try to go to a different place every year, because fauna, and flora, and the air are different.Spending holidays on the beach is a great rest though many people combine sunbathing with visiting museums and places of interest.
